Caution - spoiler alert

While there are many things in motherhood that I would like to think I have a handle on and heck, might even excel at....being the Tooth Fairy ISN’T one of them.

My youngest daughter lost her tooth 5 weeks ago...that’s right FIVE WEEKS ago and the tooth fairy still hasn’t come! It’s been under her pillow in a plastic baggie for FIVE WEEKS. Tonight, she let it be known, once again, in front of the whole family, how BAD her tooth fairy is. Luckily, her siblings have her tooth fairy’s back and suggested that maybe the tooth fairy can’t find it up on her top bunk, under the 20 or so pillows she sleeps with. An idea was put forth that maybe she should put her pillow down on the floor in her open doorway so there was no way she could miss it. (Thankfully the older siblings didn’t suggest the real reason, that their mother is a flake in this department😳).

How do you handle Santa, the Easter Bunny, The Great Pumpkin? When you have children that span 5, 7, 8+ years, how do you ensure the youngest has the same experiences with the magical beings that your older children had? How do you keep the magic alive and the joy of the holidays fresh & exciting?

For us, there is an unspoken rule that if you don’t believe, they won’t come. That’s it. Nice and simple.

It’s been talked about since they were little and reinforced over and over again throughout their childhood. This one rule has ensured that my youngest gets the same magical experience that the older ones got. I’m not sure at what age it will all end, but the holidays are important in our house and the magic and fun behind chocolate eggs, presents under the tree and money under their pillow are memories that we all cherish. It is fully understood in our house that no one is allowed to ruin the fun by looking for gifts, trying to catch Santa, or pointing out any of the other, rather obvious, faults in logic that surrounds these holidays/events.

So, tonight, the tooth fairy will finally come and take the tooth placed under the pillow in the doorway and leave a rather hefty amount of guilt money. The bonus for the kids is that the longer the tooth fairy has been MIA, the higher the value of the tooth.
